Speech Delay in Children

Many of our children suffer from speech delay. We usually notice the problem but may not know its cause. There are various reasons you should be aware of so you can address the issue with your child.

Causes of speech delay in children:

  • Organic Causes: Such as a “tongue-tie,” which usually requires a simple procedure.
  • Hearing Loss: Where the child finds it difficult to form words because they cannot hear them clearly.
  • Autism Spectrum Disorder: Children with autism often experience challenges with verbal communication.
  • Intellectual Disabilities: These can sometimes be a primary cause of delayed speech development.
  • Neurological Issues: Certain neurological disorders can impact the physical or cognitive ability to speak.
  • Psychological Factors: Such as stuttering or the inability to pronounce specific letters due to anxiety or stress.
  • Language Differences: This can occur in bilingual households when parents speak different native languages, sometimes causing temporary confusion.
