Mood Swings in Adolescents

  • Most of us find it difficult to understand the moods of adolescents and, consequently, find it hard to deal with them. We must understand the causes of their mood swings so that we can interact with them effectively.

Causes of Mood Swings in Adolescents:

  1. Hormonal Changes:
These usually begin between the ages of 10 and 14 for females and 12 and 16 for males. These changes cause emotional disturbances, confusion, and discomfort, which explains why they may act irrationally, especially with parents and family members.
  2. Psychological Disorders:
Such as Bipolar Disorder, where they may feel abnormally elated—making it difficult to focus on daily tasks—and at other times feel extreme sadness, low energy, or even experience suicidal thoughts. When an adolescent suffers from depression, they feel intense sadness all the time, tend to isolate themselves, and lose interest or enthusiasm for any type of activity.
  3. Intense Academic Pressure:
Adolescents live in a fast-paced and competitive world that puts them under constant pressure regarding their academic achievement or even success in their favorite hobbies or sports. They often feel they have lost control in this accelerating world.
  4. Lack of Sleep and Rest:
Due to the aforementioned factors, adolescents find themselves under severe stress, making sufficient rest essential. Failing to get enough rest or sleep (ranging between 8 to 9 hours) contributes significantly to increasing mood swings in adolescents.
