How to Interact with People with Special Needs

It is common to feel hesitant when interacting with people who have mental, physical, or sensory disabilities. However, it is best to treat them just as you would treat anyone else, without discrimination or distinction. To avoid unintentionally causing distress, it is preferable to consider the following points when interacting with them:

* When speaking with people with special needs, you should:

  • Speak respectfully and with the same level of respect shown to others.
  • Speak to them directly without relying on intermediaries as if you are unable to communicate with them.
  • Be patient and accepting when speaking with them.
  • Do not ask about the cause of the disability.

* To interact appropriately with people with special needs, make sure to:

  • Put yourself in their position to better understand how they feel.
  • Offer assistance in a sincere and respectful manner.
  • Avoid joking about their disability.
  • Take into account that people with special needs have the ability to develop their skills and rely on themselves; do not underestimate them.
