How to Interact with People with Special Needs

It is common to feel hesitant when interacting with people who have mental, physical, or sensory disabilities. However, it is best to treat them just as you would treat anyone else, without discrimination or distinction. To avoid unintentionally causing distress, it is preferable to consider the following points when interacting with them:

* When speaking with people with special needs:

  • Speak respectfully, showing the same level of respect you offer to others.
  • Speak to them directly without relying on intermediaries, as if you are unable to communicate with them.
  • Be patient and accepting during conversations.
  • Do not ask about the cause of their disability.

* To interact appropriately, ensure you:

  • Put yourself in their shoes to better understand how they feel.
  • Offer assistance in a sincere and respectful manner.
  • Avoid making jokes about their disability.
  • Keep in mind that people with special needs have the ability to develop their skills and rely on themselves, so do not underestimate them.
